Navy and Gold “In the Clouds and Over the Moon” Baby Shower
A couple of weeks ago we threw a baby shower for my dear friend, Shelby and her soon to be baby boy, Hampton Lee! Shelby’s husband, Kellan, serves as our church’s music minister so it was a church wide affair and we had a great group of girls to pull this shindig together. Shelby is using the colors navy and gold in Hampton’s nursery so we decided to go with that as a general theme. Scroll to the end of the post to see how I made the sign and clouds pictured above!
This was a come and go, afternoon shower so we decided on cupcakes, fruit, and veggies. Our food team girls were so amazing and made such a beautiful display with a hodge podge of serving pieces we all brought. Ok y’all…if you haven’t discovered Sam’s cupcakes, you are missing out! They are hard to beat in the flavor department and incredibly cheap at $13.43 for 30 cupcakes. We ordered white cake with white buttercream icing and added our own gold sprinkles from Amazon. Hobby Lobby also carries the same sprinkles. Back to the Sam’s bakery… because well I just love their cake and who doesn’t love good cake?! I always order their plain cupcakes or cakes for my kids’ birthday parties and add embellishments myself. They have a 6″ cake/ 10 cupcake combo that makes a great smash cake for the little ones!
For the flowers I picked up several varieties from Trader Joe’s and Central Market. Trader Joe’s has great prices on fresh flowers and Central Market has more unique types. Two of the hostesses arranged these and I love how they turned out! For under $50 we were able to make five substantial arrangements for the tables with several flowers left over! The vases were from the floral department at Hobby Lobby on a half off week of course!
How fun is this mocktail station?! Erin, pictured above, volunteered to bring a “fun punch”. I was thinking “oh, that would be great… baby showers and punch go hand in hand”. The day we were setting up, she came with this whole mocktail set up and played bartender during the entire shower! It was such a wonderful touch and everyone loved it!
The sweet hostesses! Love these girls!
We met Shelby and Kellan almost five years ago after we moved back to Texas. It has been so wonderful to walk through these past years and the births of all our babies together and we cannot wait to meet their newest addition so soon!
Here are directions for how I made the big circle sign and hanging clouds:
When I was searching for navy and gold décor, I ran across this sweet saying on a similar sign that was painted more like an actual moon. I wanted to pull in more gold so I painted mine with gold acrylic paint. My dad loves woodworking and any time I need something made out of wood he is my first and only call! He has a really neat Rockler circle jig that cuts perfect circles with a router and that’s what he used to cut this 36″ circle out of plywood.
For the wording I created an image in my photo editing program and sized it to 36″ x 36″. I added a circle on the image to make sure the wording would fit on my sign once it was printed out. After the image was sized I ordered it as a B&W blueprint from Staples and picked it up the next day. I then placed the print out on my circle and moved it around to where I wanted the wording. I made a crease all around the circle and taped it down. With a ballpoint pen I traced over the letters leaving a slight indention in the wood. After all of the letters were transferred I traced and filled in the words with a white paint pen.
For the clouds, I used paper lanterns and pillow fiber-fil (stuffing is really what I call it)! One of my favorite things to do is to take inexpensive, average items and turn them into something new! I was just talking to some girlfriends about how Dollar Tree has really stepped up their game lately. I mean I’ve always loved Dollar Tree and any dollar store really but they have some super legit things now that you can’t get at other places as cheap. I found the paper lanterns there 2/$1. Even on sale at other stores this was by far the cheapest I had seen them. If you’re a crafter I’m sure you’ve heard of polyfil or fiberfil (pillow stuffing) you can buy at Hobby Lobby or JoAnn’s. Its great but can be pricy. Years ago a friend shared this amazing hack with me: buy the cheapo pillows from Wal-Mart, slice them open, and at less than $2.50 a pop you have the same stuffing you would have paid double or triple for! Sorry for my stuffing rant…I’m done now! The only other supply you will need is a hot glue gun with plenty of glue sticks.
Supplies: paper lanterns, pillow stuffing, glue gun with plenty of glue sticks
Once you have your supplies it is really quite simple to make the clouds. I just grabbed a handful of stuffing and balled it up in my hands before generously squeezing hot glue on the part of the paper lantern that I wanted to glue my stuffing ball. After you glue the stuffing balls all over the paper lantern you can go back and use smaller balls to fill in so they are all nice and close together. Make sure none of the paper lantern is showing. For my clouds I used 4 white lanterns and 2 blue because they were out of white and the color did not show through at all so really any color lanterns would work!
The next thing I needed to figure out was how to hang them. I wanted to use fishing line so you wouldn’t see the string but I needed them to be hanging out from the plywood backdrop and not touching it at all so it would appear that they were floating like real clouds. While I was at the Dollar Tree I spotted these (above) yard flag hooks and thought they were just the thing. Initially the hooks had an additional right angle piece on the bottom that I had to remove. I wanted the hooks to lay flush against the back of the backdrop so I broke those pieces off and then spray painted the top parts gold that would be seen hanging over. I screwed them in to secure them flush against the back of the plywood. I then hung them from the hooks with fishing line at varying heights.
And finally as I said earlier: Trader Joe’s and Central Market for the flower win!
This was such a fun shower celebrating with our church family the upcoming arrival of Hampton Lee and we cannot wait to see his sweet face!
